Cultural Competency and Healing Racism

Cultural Competency Workshop

Description: In cities across our nation racism is being declared a public health crisis; yet many behavioral health providers are not prepared to adequately assess, treat or acknowledge Black and Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) experiences with racial trauma. By intentionally learning to go beyond the “colorblind” narrative, clinicians can better address the underlying racial discrimination BIPOC experience individually and collectively. Through a virtual platform, participants will be invited to actively participate in activities to define racial bias and identify the subsequent mental health implications. This workshop will provide participants with the skills necessary to expand their practice, assess for racial trauma, and identify the pervasive symptoms BIPOC may exhibit. Participants will leave better prepared to recognize and heal the impact of racism by increasing their ability to have productive conversations with white and BIPOC clients, supervisees, and colleagues.

Objectives: At the conclusion of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the role of racial bias in regard to access and engagement in behavioral health services.

  2. List 2 ways clinicians can heal racial trauma.

  3. Describe 3 presenting symptoms associated with exposure to racism.

  4. Leave prepared to share resources for white and BIPOC to support dialogue across racial differences.
