Cultural Competency and Healing Racism
Cultural Competency Workshop
Description: In cities across our nation racism is being declared a public health crisis; yet many behavioral health providers are not prepared to adequately assess, treat or acknowledge Black and Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) experiences with racial trauma. By intentionally learning to go beyond the “colorblind” narrative, clinicians can better address the underlying racial discrimination BIPOC experience individually and collectively. Through a virtual platform, participants will be invited to actively participate in activities to define racial bias and identify the subsequent mental health implications. This workshop will provide participants with the skills necessary to expand their practice, assess for racial trauma, and identify the pervasive symptoms BIPOC may exhibit. Participants will leave better prepared to recognize and heal the impact of racism by increasing their ability to have productive conversations with white and BIPOC clients, supervisees, and colleagues.
Objectives: At the conclusion of this training, participants will be able to:
Describe the role of racial bias in regard to access and engagement in behavioral health services.
List 2 ways clinicians can heal racial trauma.
Describe 3 presenting symptoms associated with exposure to racism.
Leave prepared to share resources for white and BIPOC to support dialogue across racial differences.
Institute for Equity Activism
To build a more just and racially equitable world, we need leaders able to identify and dismantle systems of white supremacy and oppression in our daily lives, our communities, and our country. The Institute for Equity Activism is for the person who wants to make a positive difference in their community or organization but does not currently have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to know how.
Over the course of six modules, participants will build a common vocabulary around racial equity and ground you in the history of both systemic racial oppression and successful communal efforts to disrupt it. We will also build the skills to create mutually beneficial partnerships, facilitate difficult and transformative conversations, and the ability to use story and the arts as a catalyst for social justice.
